Plot Summary
A man describes how his friend has a son in prison. While on a visit with his son, his friend struggles to return back to the real world, as he knows that he has to leave his son behind. Now, the friend has passed away. The man receives an envelope from this friend and expresses his surprise, as they were not close. He decides to search for the son, but becomes frustrated with the tedious process of tracking him down. Strangely, when he writes to his friend’s attorney and asks about the son’s whereabouts, the attorney claims that the friend has never mentioned having a son. The man manages to track down the son and writes a letter to him where he expresses his condolences for his father’s death. The son sends a letter back which claims he never knew his father. In the process of the search for the son, the man meets with an Asian woman, the assistant to his friend’s attorney. He begins a sexual relationship with the woman. The man writes to the son and asks for an opportunity to visit him, and the son replies with a visitation form attached to his letter. The son tells the man to explain his relation to the son as “father” on the visitation form. In response to this request, the man becomes paranoid, worried that it will be discovered that he is not the real father. He gathers more information about the son’s criminal record and discovers that the son has committed numerous crimes. When the man finally goes to visit the son, his anxiety grows as he passes each checkpoint through the prison. At the last checkpoint, he fights the urge to run away as he waits for the son. He never gets to see the son, however. After a period of waiting, someone lets him know the visit has been canceled and to contact them again at another time.
