Pim, a young Jewish boy in Poland, likes to be the center of attention, but one day nobody notices his antics. He even tries swearing to get his mother to react, but she does nothing.
When his Uncle Shulim comes to visit, Pim tries to greet him at the door, but his uncle brushes him aside and goes to have a serious conversation with Pim's parents.
More of his family members come, as well as some friends from around their village. They are all worried and uneasy. Picking up on this, Pim begins to cry. This causes his mother to cry out, worried about what will happen to her baby. She dresses him in dirty shoes, and then the village elder comes and says something to Uncle Shulim.
Shortly after, the whole family goes outside and gets into wagons. Pim sees his Uncle Hershel sitting by himself praying, and he goes over to him. After a while, his uncle asks Pim if he remembers the prayers he was taught. Pim then goes back to his mother, who kisses him so hard that it hurts. He asks her where they are going, and she says that they are going to the trains.
