In 1970s America, a teenage girl observes the members of her synagogue's Torah study group as they gather each Sunday to play poker. The members of the group include the girl's parents, her neighbor Sam, her best friend Margie's father and grandfather, the cantor, and the rabbi. Margie is attracted to the rabbi, and she often calls to ask what the rabbi is wearing. The adults allow the girl to walk around the table and look at everyone's hands, as long as she maintains a straight face. The rabbi often wins the games. One day, she sees that the rabbi is bluffing as he wins a big portion of money—he chooses not to reveal what his hand was after everyone else folds.
