Plot Summary
Rook, a man from New York City, works at a Harlem detective agency. Rook is traveling to Florida with Sabrina Ross, his boss and girlfriend. With them is Crystal Figueroa, the leader of a mob murder squad, and her two-year-old daughter. Rook and Brina are helping Crystal and her daughter escape from rival gangsters to Tampa. On the way through Virginia, the group stops at a diner for dinner. Rook surveys the racial demographic of the diner and worries that their group of four black individuals throws off the racial balance which could cause problems. The server, Burt, and the cook, George, are very nice to the group, and they recommend a motel next door. The next morning, Rook goes to the diner alone for breakfast while the women get ready at the motel. While he is eating, a short latino man comes in. The man is angry and impolite. He asks if Burt and George saw a woman come through the diner the day before with a little girl. Burt says yes, and asks why the man wants them. The man says that the woman, who he calls "Diamond" is his wife, which Burt can tell is a lie. Burt gives the man directions to the wrong location. The man has a hand on a gun in his waistband, but he leaves without trouble, although he does not pay for his food. When the man has left, Burt and George give Rook scissors and tell him that Crystal's hair must be cut, and her daughter should be dressed like a boy so that they are not recognized as easily. Burt shows Rook a gun that he has behind the counter, and assures Rook that he will handle the man if he comes back.
