In a modern-day society, a very slow-moving, local feeling summer haze floats about Lynnie and Isobel and their forbidden friendship. However, Isobel has moved away mysteriously, and Lynnie does not know why. Lynnie has always felt isolated from other people in the community because of her financial situation, and her friends' families have never been comfortable having her hang around. Lynnie finally understands why Isobel left when Isobel's mother tells Lynnie why she never wanted her around.
