Lamont, a young black man, arrives home with his friends after attending a dance-like ritual. Ethiopia, China, and Jette, all visiting from out of town, explain to their friend that the ritual uses ancient ceremonial movements to unlock inner space chambers. While the friends are talking, Lamont's father Fred enters the room and begins teasing them. He is not familiar with the rituals they are referencing and laughs at their strange terminology. The girls explain that the ritual is part of their African culture, and they invite Fred's father, Mr. Sanford, to their upcoming show, where they'll perform with the jazz musician Sun Ra. Fred accepts the invitation, but when the day comes he finds himself with a bad stomach ache and stays home to nap instead. Before he falls asleep, he puts on one of his son's Sun Ra records.
Some time later, he hears a knock at the door and opens it to see Sun Ra wearing a huge mask, dressed in elaborate ceremonial clothing. Sun Ra tells him that he is an ambassador from the intergalactic federation of outer space and guides him onto his spaceship using hypnotic music. Once in space, Sun Ra explains to Mr. Sanford that they are traveling by using enlightenment to ride sacred sounds and vibratory star patterns. Sun Ra says that in order to achieve inner peace as a black person on Earth, one must be in tune with both their inner and outer selves. He then takes Fred to the Black Sanctuary in space to nourish their spirits.
Back on Earth, Fred is asleep and singing, and Sun Ra and his friends enter and wake him. Fred realizes that his experience in space must have been a strange dream. When Sun Ra and the others leave, only Fred and his son Lamont remain. Lamont passes on a message from Sun Ra, telling his father that the musician would like to one day meet him at the Black Sanctuary, not knowing what that means. In shock, Mr. Sanford spits out his drink.
