Short stories by Charles Johnson

Charles Richard Johnson is an American scholar and the author of novels, short stories, screen-and-teleplays, and essays, most often with a philosophical orientation and an eye toward the issues of black life in America. He has published novels like Oxherding Tale and Dreamer, and his novel, Middle Passage, won the National Book Award for Fiction in 1960. His short stories have appeared in Best American Short Stories, O. Henry Prize Stories, Playboy Stories: The Best of Forty Years of Short Fiction, Best Buddhist Writing, Best Spiritual Writing, and others publications and anthologies. His work has also been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and the MacArthur Genius Grant. In 2003, the Charles Johnson Society was established in his honor.
